Before you start: this is an independent planning tool, not an IRCC decision tool. It estimates a focused part of the Comprehensive Ranking System using the information you enter. Your Express Entry profile, eligibility, category-based eligibility and invitation outcome are determined only by IRCC.

Your CRS score is not your invitation probability

The Comprehensive Ranking System ranks candidates in the Express Entry pool. It is scored out of 1,200 points. A profile must first be eligible for at least one Express Entry program; only then can it enter the pool and be considered in general, program-specific or category-based invitation rounds.

IRCC chooses the round type, decides how many invitations to issue and then invites the highest-ranked eligible candidates in that round. A published cut-off is therefore a past result, not a promise about the next draw.

Score component

What it can include

Why it matters

Core human capital

Age, education, official language ability, Canadian work experience

These are often the largest controllable parts of a profile.

Spouse factors

Spouse’s education, language results and Canadian work experience

Relevant where a spouse or partner accompanies the applicant.

Skill transferability

Combinations of education, language and work experience

Improving language results can unlock points beyond the basic language score.

Additional points

Provincial nomination, French, Canadian education, eligible sibling

A provincial nomination adds 600 CRS points.

IRCC’s published criteria set a maximum of 1,200 points. Provincial nomination is the largest single additional factor, with up to 600 points.

Before you calculate CRS: are you eligible for Express Entry?

CRS is a ranking score, not a substitute for eligibility. Express Entry manages applications under three programs:

  • Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSW): typically for candidates with qualifying skilled foreign work experience.

  • Canadian Experience Class (CEC): typically for candidates with qualifying Canadian skilled work experience.

  • Federal Skilled Trades Program (FST): for eligible skilled-trades candidates who meet its separate job-offer or certificate-of-qualification rules.

For FSW, IRCC says skilled experience must be in NOC TEER 0, 1, 2 or 3, and applicants who meet the minimum requirements must score at least 67 out of 100 under FSW selection factors to enter the pool.

Do not confuse these two scores: the 67-point FSW selection-factor test is an eligibility screen. Your CRS score is the ranking score used inside the Express Entry pool.

How to improve a low CRS score without wasting a year

The best improvement depends on your actual profile. Do not choose a course, job or test only because someone online says it “adds points.” First identify the weakest part of your own file.

Profile gap

Action worth checking

Reality check

Language below CLB 9

Retake an accepted language test with targeted preparation

Language can increase basic points and skills-transferability points.

No French results

Assess whether French study is realistic for your timeline

NCLC 7 across all abilities can lead to 25 or 50 additional CRS points, depending on English results.

Limited Canadian experience

Check whether you can lawfully gain qualifying Canadian work experience

Only qualifying paid experience counts; status and occupation rules matter.

Score far below relevant draws

Research provincial nominee streams tied to your occupation, province or Canadian connection

A valid nomination adds 600 CRS points, but each PNP has its own rules and intake limits.

Education not assessed

Obtain an ECA from an approved organization

Without the proper assessment, a foreign credential may not generate the CRS education points you expect.

Occupation fits a category

Check the exact NOC and category work-experience rules

Being in a sector is not enough; eligibility is defined by current ministerial instructions.

IRCC’s current CRS criteria confirm that French, Canadian education, an eligible sibling and provincial nomination can provide additional points. Job-offer CRS points were removed effective March 25, 2025.

2026 category-based selection: check the exact occupation rule

Category-based rounds do not replace Express Entry eligibility. You must be eligible for one of the three Express Entry programs before IRCC can place you in the pool and consider you for a category-based round.

Canada’s 2026 Express Entry categories include French-language proficiency, healthcare and social services, STEM, trades, education and transport. The 2026 framework also identifies categories for physicians, researchers and senior managers with qualifying Canadian work experience, as well as skilled military recruits.

Healthcare and social servicesCheck the precise NOC list and required recent work experience—not just the job title.

French-language proficiencyStrong French can affect both category eligibility and CRS additional points, but the requirements are separate.

Trades, STEM, education, transportConfirm that the duties in your reference letters match the selected NOC’s lead statement and main duties.

Documents to prepare before you enter the pool

  • Valid passport or travel document

  • Language-test results from an accepted test, generally less than two years old

  • Educational Credential Assessment for foreign education, where required

  • Detailed work-reference letters, contracts and pay evidence

  • Correct NOC code based on your actual duties—not only your job title

  • Proof of Canadian work experience, if claimed

  • Provincial nomination certificate, if claimed

  • Proof of sibling relationship and Canadian status, if claimed

  • Marriage, divorce, common-law or dependent-child documents where relevant

After an Invitation to Apply, a provincial nominee applying through Express Entry has 60 calendar days to apply for permanent residence online.

The mistake that ruins good profiles

The most damaging error is treating the calculator result as permission to claim points you cannot prove. An Express Entry profile should be built from evidence: test results, credential assessment, work records and accurate NOC duties.

IRCC’s official CRS calculator says its result is general guidance and that the Express Entry electronic system governs if there is a discrepancy. Use an estimate to plan, then verify everything with official tools before you submit a profile.

Sources and update policy

This page is reviewed whenever IRCC changes CRS criteria, category-based selection rules or Express Entry instructions. It uses official Government of Canada sources as its primary basis. The interactive quick check is deliberately conservative and does not claim to reproduce every CRS scenario.
