Canada Study Permit 2026 for Nigerians: The Proof-of-Funds “Loader” Scam and the Safe Way to Show Money
Someone offers to put money into your bank account so you can show a stronger balance for a Canadian study permit. Should you accept it?

Usually, no. If money is only placed in your account temporarily to create an appearance of financial capacity, presenting it as your available funds can create a serious credibility and misrepresentation problem. The safe alternative is not a magic balance: it is a traceable, truthful explanation of who owns the money, where it came from, and how it will pay for your studies.
Important: This is educational information, not legal advice or an eligibility decision. Requirements change. Confirm the current rules on Canada.ca before applying.
The short answer
Do not use a “loader” arrangement to manufacture a bank balance. Do not submit borrowed funds as if they were your own. Do not use altered, rented or fabricated statements.
A legitimate financial plan can include money from:
your own savings;
a parent or family sponsor;
a genuine documented gift;
an education loan;
a scholarship;
a combination of these.
The difference is documentation and truth. The funds must be genuinely available for your tuition, living costs and travel, and your application must accurately explain their source and conditions. IRCC requires applicants to demonstrate sufficient and available funds, unless an exemption applies.
What is a “loader” arrangement?
In this context, a loader is someone who temporarily places a large amount of money in an applicant’s account so the applicant can obtain a bank statement showing a target balance. The money may be removed after the statement is issued.
The problem is not simply that another person helped you. The problem is that the statement can create a misleading impression that the money is yours, available to you, or stable when it is not.
If an agent says: “We will load the account, print the statement, then remove the money,” treat that as a major stop sign. Do not proceed without independent professional advice.
Genuine support versus manufactured funds
Situation | What makes it potentially explainable | Risk if badly documented |
Parent pays tuition and living costs | Sponsor letter, relationship evidence, income proof, bank history and transfer trail | Officer cannot connect income to funds |
Relative provides a genuine gift | Gift letter, proof of relationship, source of gift and transfer records | Deposit looks unexplained or temporary |
Education loan | Official lender agreement, approved amount and disbursement terms | Loan is described inaccurately |
Scholarship | Award letter stating amount, period and conditions | Funding does not cover the full budget |
Temporary “loaded” balance | No genuine ownership or ongoing availability | Misleading financial picture and refusal risk |
A gift is not the same as a temporary balance rental. A sponsor is not the same as an unexplained deposit. Describe the arrangement exactly as it is.
What money must cover
For a single applicant outside Quebec, the living-expense threshold was CAD 22,895 under the amount reported for applications from 1 September 2025. Tuition and transportation are additional. The amount is adjusted annually, so verify the current figure before filing.
Your planning worksheet should be:
first-year tuition
+ required living expenses
+ transportation to and from Canada
+ costs for accompanying family members, if applicable
= funding you must realistically explain
Do not build a plan that depends on working in Canada to create the initial proof of funds. Canadian guidance says students must show enough money to support themselves; work after arrival is not a substitute for truthful upfront evidence.
The source-of-funds test
For every major amount, prepare a clear answer to seven questions:
Who owns the money?
How was it earned or obtained?
When did it enter the account?
Why was it transferred?
Is it a gift, loan, savings or sponsorship?
Is it still available for the full purpose stated?
Which document proves each answer?
If the answer is “an agent arranged it,” stop. An agent is not a source of funds.
If your money comes from a Nigerian sponsor
Build a sponsor file that matches the real arrangement. Depending on the circumstances, this may include:
signed sponsorship or support letter;
proof of relationship;
sponsor’s employment letter;
payslips and bank statements;
tax or business records where available;
remittance records;
tuition payment receipt, if already paid;
clear explanation of large deposits;
evidence of the sponsor’s continuing ability to support you.
Do not copy a template that says the sponsor will pay an amount they cannot realistically afford. The numbers, timeline and story must agree.
Six-month bank history: explain the story
A strong file is not just a final balance. It is a credible timeline. Create a table like this for yourself:
Date | Amount | Account | What happened | Evidence |
12 Jan | ₦… | Sponsor | Salary/remittance | Payslip/remittance receipt |
03 Mar | ₦… | Applicant | Transfer from sponsor | Bank transfer + support letter |
15 Apr | ₦… | Applicant | Tuition payment | School receipt |
22 May | ₦… | Applicant | Sale of asset | Sale agreement + ownership record |
A large deposit is not automatically fatal. An unexplained, inconsistent or temporary deposit is the problem. Include evidence rather than hoping the officer will infer the story.
Red flags from agents
Stop and independently verify if an agent says:
“Everyone uses this method.”
“The money is only needed for the statement.”
“The embassy will not check.”
“We guarantee approval.”
“Do not mention the loan or sponsor.”
“Sign the form; we will complete the details later.”
“You cannot see the documents we submit.”
“Pay into a personal account today.”
You are responsible for the information in your application even when a representative completes it. Canada states that false or misleading information can result in refusal, and misrepresentation can carry a five-year ban.
Verify the representative
If you pay for Canadian immigration advice or representation, check that the person is authorized. IRCC directs applicants to verify Canadian immigration consultants through the College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants and to use the appropriate law-society channel for lawyers.
Before payment, request:
legal name and licence details;
written service agreement;
itemized fees;
refund policy;
official receipt;
copies of every form and document submitted.
No consultant can guarantee approval.
The honest application audit
Do not submit until you can answer “yes” to all of these:
My school and programme are genuine and eligible for my intended route.
My letter of acceptance is authentic.
I know whether I need a provincial attestation letter.
My tuition, living costs and travel are covered in a realistic budget.
I can explain the source of every large deposit.
My sponsor’s income supports the promised amount.
My study plan matches my education and work history.
All forms are complete and truthful.
I have copies of everything submitted.
I have checked the current official requirements.
IRCC has reported cases involving fraudulent documents and misrepresentation in the international student program, including false educational records and non-genuine letters of acceptance.
What to do if an agent already loaded your account
Do not submit the application using the statement without obtaining advice from an authorized Canadian immigration professional. Preserve:
messages with the agent;
payment receipts;
bank records;
the source and return of the funds;
every document prepared.
Do not invent a new explanation or alter documents. If you suspect fraud or misleading information, Canada provides reporting channels for representatives and immigration fraud.
Safe preparation order
Choose the actual school and programme.
Confirm the current study-permit requirements on Canada.ca.
Calculate tuition, living costs and travel.
Identify the real owner and source of each fund.
Build the sponsor, gift or loan evidence.
Explain unusual deposits before submission.
Complete the study plan from your real history.
Verify your representative, if using one.
Review every submitted answer yourself.
Submit only a truthful and traceable file.
Bottom line
A higher bank balance is not automatically a stronger application. A truthful, stable and documented financial story is stronger than a temporary balance that exists only to print a statement.
If the money is not genuinely available to you, do not present it as your funds. If an agent tells you to hide its source, do not submit.
